The work throughout this studio commented on a selfish generosity; what is it, why is it useful, and how to apply it. A wide variety of techniques like: form, grids, repetition, materials, the monumental, and the adaptable were the methods for illustrating my stance towards my polemic throughout this studio.
The title of this project reveals a lot about this project. There is an inherent disjunct between the words uncompromising and benevolence, yet this project fuses the two with the juxtaposition of inside and out. Its mask like exterior precludes an opulent interior. There is also another aspect to the title that this building embodies; the idea of a selfish generosity. The complex exists to serve itself, but in doing so creates an environment of kindness within; its own private compassion, seperate from the city.
For the final projects of the studio, their design became the foundations for how to apply an architecture of pomp-and-circumstance to that of an apartment building. Like my other public architecture the exterior mask of the builds should fortify itself against an outside world. However, unlike public institutions, apartments require a much more gentile and equipped approach in order to provide for and attend to its inhabitants. The result of these approaches to both interior and exterior results in a highly dichotomous project, one that is both self-centred and caring. Something that truly is an exercise in uncompromising benevolence.
